Flower scissors are a basic tool for ikebana. To arrange flowers as you envision, it is necessary to cut the stems and branches of plants as you desired. There is a saying, "Flower scissors are your another hand," and becoming proficient in using them as if they were an extension of your hand signifies advanced ikebana skills.
About Flower Scissors |
Unlike regular scissors, flower scissors have long handles and no loops for fingers. The blades are also short compere to regular scissors. There are various sizes and materials available, so choose one that fits your hand. The recommended size is one where the curled part of the handle slightly extends beyond your hand when gripped. As a guideline, men should use a size #6 (18.18 cm / 0.60 ft.), and women should use a size #5.5 (16.66 cm / 0.55 ft.).
Materials of Flower Scissors |
Flower scissors can be processed in two ways: blackened (黒打: Kurouchi) or whitened (白打: Shirouchi).
The typical material for flower scissors is steel, which is iron combined with carbon and other elements. The characteristics include a soft feel, and with practice, they become more comfortable in your hand, allowing you to sense the texture of the flowers through the scissors. Compared to stainless steel, steel blades are easier to sharpen and become "your own scissors" with use and maintenance.
Stainless steel scissors are less prone to dirt, have hard blades with good sharpness, and are less likely to chip compared to steel scissors.
How to Hold |
Hold the upper handle between your thumb and palm, and place the remaining four fingers on the lower handle. When you open the four fingers, the weight of the handle opens the blades. Check the opening and closing of the blades by squeezing and releasing them.

How to Cut |
As a general rule, cut both wood and grass material at an angle. This increases the surface area of the cut, improving water absorption and making it easier to insert into the kenzan pin holder.
For thick branches, make additional cuts at the cut end. For branches and thick stems, cut with the back of the blades for better leverage and cutting efficiency.
The tips of the blades are suitable for fine work, such as cutting thin twigs, leaves, and the bases of flowers. If the stems of grasses are too soft to stay in the kenzan, cut them straight by placing the scissors at a right angle.
Maintenance |
Flower scissors can become difficult to open and close due to dirt, so after use, wipe off the moisture and sap from the plants with a cloth and dry them thoroughly.
