As a guideline, men should use a size #6 (18.18 cm / 0.60 ft.), and women should use a size #5.5 (16.66 cm / 0.55 ft.).

Flower scissors can be processed in two ways: blackened (黒打: Kurouchi) or whitened (白打： Shirouchi).
The typical material for flower scissors is steel, which is iron combined with carbon and other elements. Compared to stainless steel, steel blades are easier to sharpen and become "your own scissors" with use and maintenance.

| How to Cut |
As a general rule, cut both wood and grass material at an angle. This increases the surface area of the cut, improving water absorption and making it easier to insert into the kenzan pin holder.
For thick branches, make additional cuts at the cut end. For branches and thick stems, cut with the back of the blades for better leverage and cutting efficiency.
The tips of the blades are suitable for fine work, such as cutting thin twigs, leaves, and the bases of flowers. If the stems of grasses are too soft to stay in the kenzan, cut them straight by placing the scissors at a right angle.
