Description
This flower vase is distinguished by its beautifully refined celadon glaze, characterized by its calm, translucent blue-green hue.
Ōkawachiyama, located in Imari City, Saga Prefecture, was the site of official kilns operated directly by the Saga Domain (Nabeshima Domain) from the 16th to the 19th century.
Surrounded on three sides by steep rocky mountains, this secluded area gathered highly skilled potters, and checkpoints were established to ensure that ceramic techniques and secrets were not disclosed outside the village.
Even today, approximately thirty kilns remain in operation, where artisans continue to preserve and develop traditional ceramic techniques. The historic architecture and dramatic mountain scenery, reminiscent of traditional landscape paintings, have earned Ōkawachiyama the name “The Village of Secret Kilns.”
This flower vase is the work of Mr. Aoki, a ceramic artist specializing in celadon ware, who creates his pieces in Ōkawachiyama.
